Origin[]
Zatana Zatara is the daughter of John Zatara, a famous stage magician and Sindella, a member of the Hidden Ones, a tribe of sorcerers. Unknown at first to Zatanna, she had inherited her mother's magic skills and father's heroism. Sindella soon returned to her people in Turkey, and left Zatanna to her father. Together, they traveled the world on a magic act. Zatanna soon lost her father but discovered his diary and created a stage persona of her own.
Most of her acts are basic magic that anyone of the craft can perform. But to make her performances all the more spectacular, she uses real magic in her final act. As a concentration technique, Zatanna says her spells backwards.
Chill of the Night[]
When Abra Kadabra attempted to ransack the Presto! Treasures of Magic display at a Gotham museum, Batman and Zatanna arrived to stop him. Kadabra was impressed by Zatanna's skill but noted that she was just an amateur. He wound a purple cloth securely over her mouth, gagging her. With Zatanna unable to speak, her powers were kept at bay and he proceeded to subdue Batman. Zatanna tugged frantically at her gag and soon found the spell to have stuffed her mouth with a seemingly infinite number of handkerchiefs. Batman was able to knock Kadabra's wand out of his hand and Zatanna snapped it in half, destroying all of Kadara's magical constructs. Free from her gag, Zatanna cast a spell to suck Kadabra into her top hat and then pulled out a miniature Kadabra in a birdcage.
Powers and Abilities[]

Magic: Zatanna has magical abilities which she channels by chanting backwards spells. She can also lay enchantments on objects with these spells. Zatanna must concentrate on her magic to make sure she is using the proper spell. It is at this point where she is most vulnerable. Mnemonic incantation is the most complicated of the mystic arts. However, this power can be easily nullified if Zatanna is gagged.
