S.T.A.R. Labs, short for The Scientific and Technological Advanced Research Laboratories, is a private research and development firm originally established near Metropolis. Founded by Garrison Slate, S.T.A.R. Labs became the forefront of scientific research and paved the way for breakthroughs in various fields such as medicine, biology, physics, technology, engineering, and recently, metahumans. Today, STAR Labs maintains facilities across the United States and the world.

Two years ago, a S.T.A.R. Labs facility was robbed by the Madniks. They were after the Quark Pistol, a powerful weapon in the wrong hands. Booster Gold intervened and shot the Pistol.

In the aftermath of Fun Haus' Christmas crime spree, Red Tornado overloaded himself and was in need of repair. Batman managed to summon a team from STAR Labs to aid in Red Tornado's rehabilitation. The Bludhaven facility housed the Stimulated Emission Light Amplifier, a device capable of projected the three basic colors (blue, green, and red) as a beam of concentrated light. The device was stolen by Crazy Quilt. Although Quilt was defeated and no scientists were harmed, the facility suffered structural damage.

After weeks of thefts, Ra's Al-Ghul's henchmen concluded their crime spree at a branch of S.T.A.R. and stole a remote power module. If not for a clash between Robin, Speedy, Aqualad, Batman, Green Arrow, and Aquaman, they wouldn't have successfully stolen it. Some time later, a ragtag team of superheroes used a S.T.A.R. Labs branch in Star City to study a Starro clone attached to Vixen. The facility is located near a sports stadium where Starro was to land and take over Earth. Months later, a S.T.A.R. Labs van took custody of the supervillain Killer Frost, in special restraints that nullified her powers.

Batman completed the Batprobe in the Gotham branch of STAR Labs. It just so happened the Weeper purchased an abandoned Pete's Pizza across the street as a failed business venture. He and the Joker used it to observe S.T.A.R. for signs of Batman. The three fought in S.T.A.R. but the battle spilled outside. Lex Luthor later attacked a S.T.A.R. Laboratory in Metropolis to draw out Superman and destroy him with a new warsuit. He did appear and gained the upperhand on Luthor.
